      Joao: The ISS was built in space. Module by module! Its assembly started in 1998 and actually we never quite stopped assemblying it. Every now and again, a new module is added or something is modified on the station. The latest module was the BEAM, an inflatable module using a new technology that might allow us to start using these type of modules:

      The first module Zarya was launched by a Proton rocket in 1998. After that there was one more Proton but mostly it was a combination of Soyuz and Space Shuttle that brought up the rest of the pieces from 1998 – 2011.
