Being called on the console phone (like the normal landline phone) by Tim for Christmas is for sure one of them! He was well aware that we are down here 24/7 also during holidays, of course.

Yeah – that’s a good memory! My first phonecall from space was quite memorable too. I talk to astronauts on the space to ground loops all the time, but one day I had a phonecall and it was silent (like not even static, just silence) and this happened five times so I thought it was a prank call. The next few times I just hung up then capcom called me and said it was an astronaut – I hung up on the international space station haha! whoops! turned out there was a fault in the Houston phone switchboard that the IP phone dials through. So they fixed it and the next phonecall we could talk normally 🙂

Also for us at the European Astronaut Centre, all of the launches and landings and EVAs are very memorable. We are a close family at work and all of us go into work even on our days off or weekends to support each other during these special events. Even when Tim came back to Earth at 3am – we were all here at work to welcome him home!

I think it was my watching my first launch at ESA, of the Swarm satellites, and thinking ‘wow I work at ESA!!!!’ I was pretty excited 🙂
