All the food has a shelf life of 2 years, so it usually gets eaten long before it expires! Astronauts eat all the food from each packet as they are small/medium servings so it’s hard to overeat or have leftovers – you can just combine different packets and tins to make up a meal to eat whatever you want for that breakfast/lunch/tea/supper/snack. Astronauts taste test lots of spacefood and choose the ones they want so they know they will like it 🙂 But if any of the food did expire… then I guess they would put it in the rubbish bag and it would burn up on reetry with the other rubbish in an old cargo vehicle.
